| Dr. Lane is University Professor, Senior Fellow in Science and Technology at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy and professor of physics and astronomy. From 1998-2001, during the latter part of the Clinton administration, Dr. Lane served as Assistant to the President of the United States for Science and Technology and, simultaneously, as Director of the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy in the White House. In these roles, he advised the president in all areas of science and technology policy and coordinated policy and programs across the federal government. He also co-chaired the president's Committee of Advisers on Science and Technology Policy and managed the president's National Science and Technology Council. In 1993, President Clinton named Dr. Lane to lead the National Science Foundation (NSF), the federal agency that provides more than $4 billion in support for research and education in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. Dr. Lane also served ex officio on the National Science Board during the time he was at the NSF. He originally joined the Rice faculty in 1966, where he was an award-winning teacher and researcher in atomic and molecular physics for more than 27 years. He has served as chair of the Department of Physics and provost at Rice, as well as chancellor of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
